Proficiency Five

Texas Learner-Centered Proficiency Five

The teacher, as a reflective practitioner dedicated to all students' success, demonstrates a commitment to learn, to improve the profession and to maintain professional ethics and personal integrity.

Reflection

I believe that it is even more important than in other professions for educators to constantly be reflective practitioners. Being a reflective practitioner means to continually reflect on thought and planning processes, teaching practices, student outcomes, ideas, activities, and all other components that make teaching what it is. After reflecting on all of those things, it is important to adjust and make changes where needed in order to help students become as successful as they can be. Even as a student teacher, I constantly reflected on my practices, lessons, teaching styles, and many other things to maintain student success and interest. I believe that reflecting on any experience is an excellent tool for anyone to use because it helps us to take a step away from the situation and think more clearly and relax. I have always had high expectations for myself to achieve my goals, and that is something that I will continue to do as an educator because I will be setting an example for my school and community.

For Proficiency Five, I have included two items that show my achievement in this area. The first is my Why Teach paper that I wrote for EDUC 5113. The second and last item to include in my portfolio is my Final Reflection of my time in the MAT program, which describes how I have grown as a professional educator.

To view these two items, please click on the Why Teach and Final Reflection pages.
