Reflection

Our world is becoming more diverse every day, which is why Proficiency Three is so important for educators to be proficient in. Growing up, I always had many friends from all walks of life, cultures, and abilities, so I have always accepted diversity. After I graduated with my bachelor’s degree, I worked for a nonprofit organization for nearly three years, where I worked with a very diverse population – diverse culture, race, ability, learning style, etc. As an employee, I participated in and completed several cultural competency trainings and learned how to work with such a diverse population. It was not until I took EDUC 5173 that I saw the true benefit of diversity and how it enriches the world we live in; EDUC 5173 helped me learn to not only accept diversity but to embrace it. Thankfully, I was able to student teach in diverse classrooms and work with mentors who had lots of experience working with diverse students.

I have successfully achieved Proficiency Three, and I have included two assignments that demonstrate my achievement. The first item is my Field-Based Reflection that I completed in EDUC 5173. The second item under this proficiency is a self-selected item that I chose to include because it is a Multicultural Lesson Plan that I created in EDUC 5173.
